In the National Statuary Hall Collection a few statues feature animals as a decorative or symbolic element. Learn about the way that animals are incorporated in various statues and what it says about the cultures, beliefs, and achievements of people like Willa Cather, Po'pay and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

Staff from the Architect of the Capitol Curator’s Office will discuss two statues unveiled in the Capitol in May. Arkansas’ statue of Daisy Lee Gatson Bates and North Carolina’s statue of William “Billy” Franklin Graham, Jr. are the newest additions to the National Statuary Hall Collection.

On May 15, 1800, President John Adams directed the federal government to begin moving to its new home, Washington, D.C. This program will trace the earliest beginnings of Washington, from the passage of the Residence Act of 1790 through the completion of the Capitol in 1826.

We will discuss John Trumbull, the artist behind the four Revolutionary War paintings in the Capitol Rotunda, as well as his painting of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence.
