Arlene Balkansky, former Reference Librarian for the Library of Congress, focuses on abolitionist Frederick Douglass and his powerful 1852 speech, "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?", given one year after the nation’s 75th anniversary. Douglass’ speech represents the cornerstone of his efforts to abolish slavery, contrasting the principles of the Declaration of Independence with the evils of enslavement.
