Roy Wilkins, executive director of the NAACP, wrote to Senator Fred R. Harris of Oklahoma, arguing that Clement Haynsworth’s segregationist opinions disqualified him for the Supreme Court. An accompanying leaflet showed that the Supreme Court had reversed Haynsworth’s decisions in four civil rights cases. Haynesworth’s judgments against minorities and workers led the Senate to reject his nomination, 44–55.
