The Local Legacies Project
For the Library of Congress’s bicentennial in 2000, members of Congress and their constituents collaborated with the Library in Local Legacies: Celebrating America’s Roots, a project documenting American folklife and popular culture. Communities in every state worked with their senators and representatives to highlight unique local traditions and festivals. The Library’s American Folklife Center preserves the recordings, reports, photographs, and artifacts submitted for Local Legacies. Together they constitute a record of the nation’s richly diverse cultures at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
