HISTORY OF CONGRESS
AND THE CAPITOL

Nelson Aldrich
1841-1915, Rhode Island

Although known as the "Boss of the Senate," Aldrich preferred working behind the scenes. One observer noted, "He never jumps into a rough-and-tumble debate." As Senate Finance chair, Aldrich promoted high tariffs to protect American industry from foreign competition. His alliance with business increasingly clashed with Progressive reforms to curb special interests.
