Douglas hoped to facilitate westward expansion and national unity by promoting the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The 1854 act allowed the people of Western territories to decide on slavery themselves. But to Douglas's dismay, the act further divided the nation. It also spurred the birth of the Republican Party, with Abraham Lincoln rising as Douglas's political opponent.
