HISTORY OF CONGRESS
AND THE CAPITOL

John Quincy Adams
1767–1848, Massachusetts

House colleagues initially deferred to Adams, a former President and Senator. But they quickly learned that Adams was not a mere ornament. Fiercely independent, he championed antislavery petitions, opposed the Mexican War, and helped establish the Smithsonian Institution. A fatal stroke felled “Old Man Eloquent” at his desk on the House floor.
