Southern Chivalry: Argument versus Club’s, 1856
This cartoon depicts South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks striking Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner with his cane. Brooks attacked him in retaliation for a speech that Sumner delivered berating Brooks’s relative, Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina. The violent episode fueled antipathy between anti-slavery northerners and pro-slavery southerners.
