Journal of Montgomery Meigs, March 4, 1861
Montgomery Meigs, supervising engineer for the Capitol extension from 1853-1859, kept daily journal entries in shorthand that included details of the construction. He also recorded his personal thoughts and political views. This March 4, 1861 entry, from when Meigs was Quartermaster General of the Union army, describes the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln on March 4, 1861, held on the Capitol’s east front plaza.
