House Members’ Double Desk, ca. 1857, altered ca. 1865
Two representatives shared this desk as their only workspace when the House moved into its new chambers in 1857. Though the desk is small by today’s standards, legislators considered their new chamber and its furnishings to be spacious and stylish.
